St. Nicholas Church.
RECTOR, REV. T. J. C. GARDNER, M.A.
ASSISTANT CURATE, REV. B. L HALL, B.A.
ST. Nicholas Church, according to Kelly's Directory, was rebuilt in 1879, and is in the Perpendicular style. It consists of chancel, organ chamber, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing five bells. In the interior wall of the porch is a Crucifix, and in a similar niche outside is a group of the Virgin and Child, both being much mutilated ; and there is a fine Norman font, which was removed from a neighbouring farm, where it had been used as a cattle trough. An alabaster pulpit was erected by public subscriptions in 1889, as a memorial to the Rev. Horatio Nelson-Ward, B.A., who was Rector, 1853-1888. The living is a Rectory in the gift of Earl Waldegrave, and has been held since 1888 by the Rev. Thomas James Christie Gardner, M.A., of S. John's College, Cambridge, and Surrogate. There are sittings in the Church for 520 persons. The Register dates from 1719.
