NCN24

A Pictorial Record of the Construction of National Cycle Route 24 Through Radstock

Week 1

February 2nd 2004 saw the beginning of the first serious work on the construction of NCN Route 24 through Radstock, Somerset.

When completed, NCN 24 will run from a junction with NCN 4 at Limpley Stoke, south of Bath, linking Bath, Radstock, Frome, Longleat, through to Salisbury.

The section under construction is being built on the route of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway from Radstock to Shoscombe Vale. Work on the section south of Radstock to the former Mells Road Station along the old Bristol and North Somerset Railway route also commenced during this week

The first set of pictures were taken on Sunday 8th February 2004.

At the access point from Tynings Hill, Radstock. Let's hope that B&NES civil engineering skills are better than their spelling!

Behind the Mill Lane Industrial Estate. The base layer of the surface already down.
At the bottom of the footpath from Whitelands.
Looks like a local resident has already started on the Sculpture Trail...
Note: Since this picture appeared here, I have been contacted by the owner of the carving, Jonathon Price of Lower Whitelands, who says: Glad to see you got our Compost Guardian Sculpture in (we hoped, unsuccessfully, it would ward off the rats!). The sculpture comes courtesy of an itinerant hippy woodcarver who walked off the street into my father's cafe in Swansea in 1967 and managed to get a commission out of him. My father retired 2 years ago, sold the cafe and there the sculpture sits. I think I'll turn it around to face the other way when the cycle path is finished.
...as have the local pond-life...
The barriers on Braysdown Lane bridge cleared..
New access point to Braysdown Lane, north of the Bridge (and another "carmageddon" style sculpture!).
Today's "frontier" - about 250 yards north of Braysdown Lane Bridge. First picture in next week's instalment starts here...
Yup! This lot are out to spoil it all, already!...
...and them as well.
No apologies for including this one - compliments of our wonderful local socially aware dog owners;

Radstock-Mells Road Station

Meanwhile, work starts on the route south of the town. The old railway wagon repair shop can be seen on the left. (Hope they didn't wake the VIP bugs...)
