A Pictorial Record of the Construction of National Cycle Route 24 Through Radstock

Week 5

On the Radstock-Shoscombe section work continues buttressing of the banks on the deviation around Paglinch Farm. I am reliably informed by a man who knows about these things that the system of wire cages full of rocks is known as "Gabion Cages"

On the Radstock-Mells Road Station section, clearance work has been completed through to the station yard. A half mile section of path foundations have been laid from a point approximately 1 mile from Radstock past Kilmersdon.

Construction of the new 300 yard section of the Norton-Radstock Greenway from Bath New Road past the back of the Tom Huyton Play Park and linking by a ramp to the existing route is expected to begin on Monday 8th March. A few "before" snaps are shown here.

This set of pictures were taken on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th March 2004, 38 years almost to the day since the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway.

Late extra, Monday 8th March:

The B&NES Project Co-ordinator for NCN 24, John Price, has very kindly sent me some pictures and narrative after his Saturday inspection tour. So, as an extra bonus this week click here for a special page from "The Boss".

They're called "Gabion Baskets".

Newly laid path foundations near Kilmersdon.

Norton-Radstock Greenway

Work starts 8th March 2004 to surface this section of the Greenway from Bath New Road past the Tom Huyton Playpark.
By the playpark looking towards Midsomer Norton.
The ramp linking down to the existing path should start about here.
The ramp from the new section should come down the bank through the trees.
