A Pictorial Record of the Construction of National Cycle Route 24 Through Radstock

Week 6

On the Radstock-Shoscombe section work on the "Gabion Cages" buttressing appears to be complete; drainage work on this very wet and muddy section seems to be under way.

It looks unlikely that the 7 week deadline for the completion of this section will be met. I understand that work has also gone over budget, which will, doubtless, cause delays to the next phase of construction between Wellow and Midford. But, hey, this is B&NES we're talking about here... so we're used to this.

On the Radstock-Mells Road Station section, the base layer started last week has been completed to within 250 yards short of Mells Road Station Yard.

Construction of the new 300 yard section of the Norton-Radstock Greenway from Bath New Road past the back of the Tom Huyton Play Park began on Monday 8th March. The ramp down to the existing Greenway has been excavated and surface preparation done throughout the section. According to signs at the site, this is a four week project. This set of pictures were taken on Saturday 13th March 2004.

Radstock-Shoscombe

"Gabion Cage" buttressing work on the Paglinch Farm deviation appears to be complete.
The track surface was very wet, claggy clay. We very foolishly attempted to ride our bikes past this point, but within a few yards the clay had locked the wheels solid and we were forced to retreat carrying the bikes. After much time trying, and failing, to clear the mud from between the wheels and the frames the trip was abandoned here.
I'll give you a million guesses what I did for the rest of the day!
Last parting shot. Heavy machinery, mud and bikes don't mix!
It looked like they were doing drainage work.

Radstock-Mells Road Station

The path's base layer now extends past this rail crossing to within a few yards of Mells Road Station yard. It doesn't look like the next train to Frome is leaving any time soon, worse luck.
The base layer stops by the road roller. The bridge carries the road to Buckland Dinham past the Mells Road Station approach drive. You can just make out a brown skip, which is situated in the station yard, in the distance.
