A Pictorial Record of the Construction of National Cycle Route 24 Through Radstock

Week 7

Work continues on the Paglinch Farm deviation on the Radstock-Shoscombe section. Drainage work on this very wet and muddy section looks to be nearly complete; rubble and hardcore base layer has been laid on part of the deviation.

On the Radstock-Mells Road Station section, the base layer has been completed to Mells Road Station Yard, and to within 3/4 mile of Radstock.

Construction of the new 300 yard section of the Norton-Radstock Greenway from Bath New Road past the back of the Tom Huyton Play Park continues. Some drainage work is being done just above the car park, and some the scalpings base layer has been put down.

This set of pictures were taken on Sunday 21st March 2004.

Radstock-Shoscombe

Paglinch Farm deviation. Drainage work appears to be nearly complete, and a base layer of rubble and hardcore has been laid from here to the top of the incline.
Near the top of the incline, showing drainage works.
More drainage works. Note new fencing bordering the field.

This is at the top of the incline on the Paglinch Farm Deviation, looking towards Radstock.

Yuk!

Radstock-Mells Road Station

Radstock. The top layer of ballast has been removed ready for the scalpings base layer of the path.
This shows the depth of ballast removed. Also shows the general poor condition of the railway sleepers. Much expensive work to be done before trains can run again.
This was something I didn't want to see. Although we realise that before trains can run again on this line much work needs to be done, which would include lifting the track to replace or clean the ballast, this is still a very sad sight.
I thought that this is symbolic of the casual attitude in this country towards a valuable national asset - just ripped up and carelessly and thoughtlessly cast aside.
The base layer of scalpings has been extended to within 3/4 mile of Meadow View, Radstock.
This is a few yards further on, looking towards Kilmersdon and Mells Road.
They just can't wait to use it! This is at Mells Road Station, looking towards Radstock.
Mells Road Station. The path crosses the railway again. Yes, there is railway track in there somewhere.
Mells Road Station. Limit of the current project. The cycle route will go through the gates on the left, then left down the station drive to the road near the junction to the Mells-Kilmersdon road, by the Hanson Pipe Works.
Mells Road Station, looking towards Frome. Let's hope the funding can be found soon to continue the path.

Norton-Radstock Greenway

Base layer on the Greenway extension.
Drainage work just above the Tom Huyton car park. Run-off water from the adjacent field has always made this section a bit boggy.
