Ambarès & Lagrave
Ambarès is situated in the Northern Gironde region of France, not far from Bristol’s twin city of Bordeaux.
It is a small, wine producing community with a population of 11,000.
Other industry in the region includes a large pharmaceutical company which provides much of the employment in the area.
The link between Norton-Radstock and Ambarès was formally established in September 1982 |

| Norton Radstock has been twinned with Ambarès-et-Lagrave for over twenty years. Ambarès is a small town in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region, about 10 miles North of Bordeaux..
Her people are warm and welcoming, as is the weather for most of the year.
Long term friendships have flourished. The twinning runs a Family Exchange and facilitates personal contacts and other trips:

The Family Exchange takes a week in August.
One year we go to Ambarès, and the next year they come to us.
The hosts usually provide beds in private houses, a reception, a dinner, a dance and two day-trips elsewhere. A few prefer to stay in a local hotel or at the campsite.
We try to find families near your ages. Our ages range from 0 to 90. We all have a very good time.
In 2003 we went to the Cite de I'espace at Toulouse and even had a party to name a tramcar NORTON-RADSTOCK in the Bordeaux Metro.
You would not see that as a tourist.
The exchange usually takes place towards the end of August, about 20th to 27th. At present we go to Ambarès on odd numbered years (2003, 2005,...) and they come here on even numbered years (2002, 2004,...)
This year, we are going at the Summer Half Term.
You could join in some of the activities. You could look after people staying in someone else's home.
You could have a person, a couple, or a family to stay with you. |

F.A.Q.'s:
I do not speak French.
Others will always translate.
Most younger French speak English.
I have no spare rooms.
Another member might house your guests.
My children are shy with strange
adults.
There are other children on the
exchange, as well as single
parents or grand parents.
You
could start the friendship in
advance, easily by email.
I don't know how to host a foreign
family.
The Twinning Association arranges
many activities.
Those hosting your
French family's friends will also
help.
It may be too expensive.
As foreign holidays go, It is very cheap: you do not pay for board and lodging.
I cannot go in August.
You could visit at some other time. |

Other activities:
We have social activities throughout the year, partially to raise funds for when we are the hosts.
We are all people who like the French and enjoy new experiences (we'll try any French wine).
We include those who like practicing their French (however badly)
The Judo Club has had many fixtures with Ambarès, and recently the Midsomer Norton Rugby Club has organised a Junior match there.
In the past the Swimming Club, local Football team, Norton Radstock College, Writhlington School and Norton Hill School have all been involved with twinning exchanges.
Individual French have done English work experience here. |
|
From June 2004 'flybe.com' airline is running direct flights between Bristol and Bordeaux.
This should enable us to make other short trips to Ambarès, or to extend our stay in the area in August. Emailing is much easier than writing long letters or telephoning. Even our children could write simple sentences in English and receive replies in simple French.
Both towns could provide translators, if needed.
More children are learning French earlier. More families have French speaking members.
More people have houses in France.
More people have European connections.
